Chief Rabbis warns ‘our leaders are legitimising hateful actions’
Speaking at No2H8 Awards, Rabbi Mirvis expressed frustration with the 'tone of hatred' by figures were failing to deal with 'substantive issues that they should be debating'
The Chief Rabbi has warned that “so many of our leaders are legitimising hateful actions and attacks on those who disagree with them”.
Speaking at the No2H8 Awards, Ephraim Mirvis expressed frustration with the “tone of hatred” set by leaders who were failing to deal with the “substantive issues that they should be debating”.
He urged attendees to “uphold the values of unity”, arguing that to say no to hate was insufficient: “we also need to say yes to love, compassion, unity and peace.”
He further cautioned of the “enormous damage” in an age of “global publishers”, where “irresponsible messages containing venom and hate” were being readily replicated.
“We should have a society of peace, harmony, unity, tolerance and compassion but sadly that is not always the case,” he added. “We should focus our attention on how we communicate, how we argue and how we relate to others who are not like us.”
