Chigwell are spot-on as they book Cup Final place
Chigwell’s masters side booked their place in the final of the MGBSFL/Masters Invitational Cup on Sunday morning after knocking out MGBSFL side SPEC in a penalty shoot-out.
The men’s Division One side had taken a first half lead through Marc Cohen, only to see Steve Summers draw Chigwell level with a neat finish. And with no more goals scored by the end of the 90 minutes, it was the Masters side who prevailed 5-4 on spot kicks.
Paul Lenchner, Steve Summers, Paul Gold, Danny Hakimi and Russell Yershon all converted from the spot, the latter the winning spot kick after Mark Jacobs had saved SPEC’s last effort.
Player-manager Richard Slater told jewishnews.co.uk: “We started slowly and were deservedly 1-0 down at the break, but we controlled the game in the second half and it’s nice for the club to get to the final. We’ll enjoy the day!”
Marc Hecht, Ashley Burns, player-manager Ricky Lawrence and Daniel Pike all scored from the spot for SPEC, with Cohen seeing his effort saved. Lawrence told jewishnews.co.uk: “It’s a shame as after a first half where I’d say we were comfortably the better side, we didn’t get going in the second half and conceding a goal so early didn’t help either. Fair play to Chigwell, they played to their strengths and I think both sides were more worried about conceding over going for the winner. Good luck to them in the final.”
In the final, set for 14 June, they will meet the winners of the other semi-final, which takes place next Sunday morning (7 June) between NL Raiders Masters/Faithold Masters.
The Raiders, who have already won the Division One Masters League title and Henry Swerner Cup, booked their place in their semi-final tie by overcoming MGBSFL Division Three side Faithfold B.
Saul Conway scored for them as the sides were level 1-1 after 90 minutes. And it was they who prevailed, also 5-4 on spot-kicks, Danny Daggers, Conway, Adam Levene, Danny Hodes and Jon Isaacs all converting from the spot.
