Chris Froome to join Israel cycling team for next season
Serial Tour de France winner, 35, will race with the Israel Start-Up Nation, in what has been described as a 'historic moment for Israeli sports'
Four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome is set to wear the blue and white of Israel’s professional cycling team from next season.
Froome, 35, is one of Britain’s most successful road cyclists and announced his next challenge in Israel after Team Ineos, with whom he rides currently, said it would not renew his contract beyond the end of this season.
He will join his new team – called Israel Start-Up Nation (ISN) – as sole team leader, with the team’s Canadian-Israeli co-owner Sylan Adams hailing the announcement as an “historic moment for Israeli sports, for our many fans and for me personally”.
A keen cyclist himself, Adams said: “This is a moment of enormous pride. Chris is the best rider of his generation and will lead our Tour de France and Grand Tour squad. We hope to make history together.”
Froome said: “I’m really excited to be joining the ISN family. I look forward to challenging and being challenged by their talent and continuing to strive for the success that I’ve enjoyed up to now. ISN’s impact on the sport is rapidly expanding, and I’m energized to be along for the ride. We can achieve great things together.”
Israel hosted the historic 2018 Giro d’Italia Grande Partenza in Israel, which trainers said helped nurture young Israeli talents and inspired a new generation of riders in Israel to take up the sport.
