Dina Brawer’s ‘get’ call
The leading UK proponent of religious Jewish women’s rights has called for more to be done to combat the “shocking” situation of men refusing to grant their ex-wives a get.
Dina Brawer, the UK ambassador of the Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance (JOFA), said the scale of the agunah (chained women) problem “is far greater than the official statistics on the number of women denied a get (religious divorce).”
“The extent of the problem is truly shocking,” she said, after
research by the Rackman Center for the Advancement of the Status of Women at Bar-Ilan University revealed three in 10 religious Jewish women in Israel are either refused a get or suffer from some kind of extortion.
“Seeing the statistics only drives home how pressing it is for the rabbinate to find constructive solutions that no longer put women at the mercy of their husbands during an already motional process.
“We hope that, through greater education and awareness in the Jewish community, we will be able to reduce the number of women going through this terrible situation.”
