Elaine Paige rolls out big hits to raise money for Holocaust survivors centre
Legendary singer said she was “delighted” to have helped raise £180,000 for Jewish Care's important centre
Elaine Paige was a star among many at a fundraising dinner for Jewish Care’s Holocaust Survivors Centre on Tuesday evening.
The singer, broadcaster and actress rolled out the big hits, including ‘Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina,’ ‘Memory’ and ‘As If We Never Said Goodbye’ after 260 guests at the Marriot Regent’s Park bash observed a minute’s silence for Pittsburgh.
Barnet-born Paige, 70, was awarded an OBE in 1995, and is known as the ‘First Lady of British Musical Theatre’ for a 50-year career in which she has starred in more Broadway and the West End hits than anyone else of her generation.
She said she was “delighted” to have helped raise £180,000 for the Holocaust Survivors Centre (HSC) this week, adding: “I heard first-hand how important the centre is for its members – some whom I was honoured to meet and speak with.”
Reflecting on the Pittsburgh attack, HSC dinner chair Tracey Kyte said: “We have here in this room those for whom the emergence of bigotry, hatred and rising antisemitism needs no explanation.”
The centre, which is trying to address a £500,000 deficit, first opened its doors 25 years ago and supports around 500 people, with new referrals still coming in. It is the only centre specifically designed for Holocaust survivors in the UK.
