Falklands Islands to be protected by Iron Dome technology
British South Atlantic islands will have the ' Sky Sabre system' after 2020 to defend itself against missiles launched from Argentina
Britain’s Falklands Islands are to be protected by the same technology behind Israel’s Iron Dome missile defence system.
Ministry of Defence chiefs appear to have opted for the £78 million Sky Sabre missile shield after the Argentinian air force purchased five advanced French fighter jets, which come armed with Exocet missiles.
The disputed South Atlantic islands are exposed both to missiles launched from the Argentinian mainland as well as those fired by Argentinian aircraft, but the Israeli kit uses cutting edge radar to intercept incoming projectiles.
The Sky Sabre system comes online in 2020, replacing the existing Rapier air defence system, as the Israeli company behind the technology prepared itself for integration into the NATO network within Britain’s command and control set-up.
