Filmed musical about 1492 expulsion of Spanish Jews available to rent
'Hidden: The Secret Jews of Spain', performed by the Women’s Performance Community of Jerusalem and OU Israel, can be rented ahead of the High Holy Days
The filmed version of a musical about Jews being expelled from Spain in 1492 has been made available to rent for the High Holy Days.
‘Hidden: The Secret Jews of Spain’ was performed by the Women’s Performance Community (WPC) of Jerusalem and OU Israel and filmed with seven cameras in front of a live audience in the Israeli capital in December 2018.
It follows some of “Spain’s secret Jews during the darkness of the Inquisition,” such as the Aguilar family, forced to cloak their identity after Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella issued an edict to force conversion or expulsion.
The pair wanted to erase any Jewish influence on the Spanish population, especially on the many newly converted Christians, and those who stayed, practicing their Judaism in secret, inspired generations of Jews throughout centuries.
