Finance expert Martin Lewis calls on ‘somebody to get grip on economy’ at TV awards
Cost of living crisis adviser, who won the expert award at annual event, had bleak predictions about the coming fiscal year.
Finance expert Martin Lewis expressed deep concern about Britain’s economy at the National Television Awards on Thursday.
In a thinly veiled jab at the government, Lewis called on “somebody to get a grip at the economy” after receiving the 2022 expert award at London’s OVO Wembley Arena.
Just hours before Kwasi Kwarteng paid the price for the chaos unleashed by his mini-budget by being sacked by Liz Truss, Lewis said: “It’s been a pretty horrible year financially. I mean, the energy crisis has been disastrous and left many people with terrible issues and mental health problems.”
“I’m afraid next year, with the mortgage problem and the knock-on to rent, is going to be pretty bad. And you know what? We need somebody to get a grip on the economy and put things a little bit back,” he added.
Sir. David Attenborough, Repair Shop star Jay Blades and Clarkson’s Farm co-host Kaleb Cooper were also nominated in the expert category.
Lewis grew up in Manchester before moving to Cheshire when his father became headmaster at a Jewish special needs school. He studied government and law at the London School of Economics, and then broadcast journalism at Cardiff University.
Lewis is now a regular TV analyst, offering advice on financial issues such as Mortgage rates, energy bills, tax breaks and savings.
He is also the founder of the website MoneySavingExpert, which he sold for £86 million in 2012.
