A major fire broke out beside a synagogue in the heart of Stamford Hill’s Orthodox Jewish community on Thursday afternoon, prompting a large emergency response and road closures in the area.

Fire crews, police and Jewish volunteer groups were called to Cazenove Road in Stoke Newington after flames engulfed a building next to a synagogue.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, and there is currently no indication that it was started deliberately.

Shomrim volunteers assisted emergency services as firefighters tackled the blaze, which sent smoke rising above nearby residential streets.

The incident unfolded close to several Jewish communal buildings, including Simon Marks Jewish Primary School, in an area with one of the largest Orthodox Jewish populations in the UK.

Videos shared on social media showed residents gathering nearby as firefighters worked to contain the flames.

In a statement posted on X, Shomrim said: “Large fire at a residential house next door to a synagogue on Cazenove Road, N16. Shomrim volunteers are assisting.

“The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, we are keeping an open mind.

“We urge the public to avoid the area to give emergency services space to operate safely.”

Further footage shared online appeared to show members of the local Jewish community removing religious items from a nearby building while firefighters remained at the scene.

Posts circulating on social media suggested the blaze may have involved a yeshiva building and residential accommodation, although this had not been officially confirmed on Thursday afternoon. There has been no official indication at this stage that the fire is being treated as suspicious.

No injuries have been reported as of yet.

Emergency services remained at the scene into the afternoon as efforts continued to bring the fire under control.
