Glushko reaches first ever WTA quarter-final
Julia Glushko reached the last eight of a WTA Tour event for the first time in her career on Wednesday when she beat American Grace Min 6-3, 6-1 in the second round of the Rio de Janeiro Open.
Glushko, ranked No. 149 in the world, has reached the third round at the US Open in 2013 and Frnech Open in 2014, but hadn’t won two consecutive main draw matches at a WTA tournament. Beating Min, ranked 104 in the world, she next takes on Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu (34) for a place in the semi-finals on Friday.
Elsewhere, Dudi Sela (90) was knocked out in the first round of the ATP tournament in Delray Beach, Florida, beaten 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 by 17-year-old Andrey Rublev (370).
