Great-granddaughter of David Lloyd-George to give synagogue lecture
Hampstead shul announces that eminent historian Margaret MacMillan will give this year's Isaiah Berlin Lecture
Hampstead Synagogue has announced that this year’s Isaiah Berlin Lecture will be given by Margaret MacMillan, the great-granddaughter of former Prime Minister David Lloyd-George.
MacMillan, an eminent historian and expert in international relations who has just delivered this year’s BBC Reith Lectures, will reflect on the lessons of the Great War at the shul’s community centre on Thursday 8 November.
Berlin was a great British philosopher, born to Jewish parents, whose ideas on liberty and pluralism have had a lasting influence. Lectures in his name are held every year at the synagogue, as well as at Wolfson College, Oxford, which he founded. Others are held at the British Academy and in Riga, Latvia, where he was born.
Last year’s lecture, the 15th in the series, was delivered by Daniel Taub, the former Israeli ambassador to Britain, who spoke about the Balfour Declaration. Past speakers have included Lord Leveson and Professor Deborah Lipstadt.
