Green light for new Salford flats is ‘win-win’ for Jewish families
'If these seven apartments are sold to people who are downsizing, seven family homes are going to become available', one Jewish woman said of the proposals
New flats in Salford could help with a shortage of suitable housing for Jewish families in the Broughton Park area after they got the go-ahead this week.
The proposed three-storey development of seven two- and three-bed flats on Old Hall Road would let downsizing religious families be close to the local synagogue, proponents said, but in other quarters there was opposition.
One councillor said the large, detached home due to be demolished was perfect for large Jewish families, but others in Prestwich said they had been waiting for three years for accommodation such as the planned apartments.
“It seems to make perfect sense,” said one Jewish woman looking to move in after her children moved out. “If these seven apartments are sold to people who are downsizing, seven family homes are going to become available. It’s a win-win.”
She added that she was “frustrated at the problems of finding our dream apartment”, and said she was speaking for “all the oldies like us who are retired and would love to move and downsize to an apartment”.
