Israel’s President Isaac Herzog has urged Jewish communities around the world to remain “cautious and vigilant”, warning that Iran is actively targeting Jews globally.

Delivering a Purim message from Jerusalem, Herzog said the Jewish people are once again confronting a moment of uncertainty and threat, but insisted unity and resilience would prevail.

Addressing Jewish communities internationally, he said the current situation reflects a familiar challenge in Jewish history – one that requires both strength and vigilance.

“The Iranian regime, that has been merciless in oppressing its own people, is now again targeting Israel, targeting American forces, targeting its neighbours, and targeting Jews around the world,” Herzog said.

He linked the regime to wider regional violence and to the 7 October Hamas attacks on Israel.

“This is the same empire of evil that empowered Hamas on 7 October,” he said.

Drawing a parallel with the Purim story, Herzog said the threat posed by Iran echoed the themes of the Book of Esther.

“This is the same evil that we read about in the Purim Megillah, Megillat Esther,” he said.

Despite the dangers, Herzog stressed that Jewish communities should respond with unity and determination.

“But as evil continues to rise up against us, in order to try to destroy us, we will meet this moment with strength, with caution, and with unity,” he said.

Referencing how Israelis are marking the festival during ongoing security threats, he added that the traditions of Purim continue even under fire.

“Throughout the Jewish world, we praise the heroism of Queen Esther and proudly boo Haman. In Israel, we do so even from within bomb shelters.”

Herzog directly addressed Jewish communities abroad, acknowledging the pressure many feel in the current climate.

“To all of you in Jewish communities around the world, I urge you all to remain cautious and vigilant. The Iranian regime seeks to harm Jews wherever they can.”

He also expressed solidarity with Jewish communities facing rising antisemitism and hostility.

“As you stand with us, we stand with you. Be cautious, be alert, and hold your head high.”

Herzog thanked Jewish communities for their support during the ongoing conflict, saying Israelis are deeply aware of the backing they receive from abroad.

“Know that you are in our hearts and prayers. Know that you are not alone, and know that we will get through this together.”

He concluded by emphasising the resilience of the Jewish people and the enduring hope for peace.

“The resolve of the Jewish people is a force of nature. It is fact, miracle and destiny,” he said.

Quoting the Purim phrase, he finished: “‘In those days, at this time.’ Am Yisrael Chai.”
