The first Mitzvah Day event under the charity’s new ‘green’ theme took place this week, as people of multiple faiths united for an environmentally-friendly cook for the homeless.
Members of the Barnet Multi Faith Forum, Barnet United Synagogue, Haringey Muslim Community, Faith Matters and Camp Unity Borehamwood came together at JW3. It was the first time many of the people – from Jewish, Muslim, Humanist and Ismaili backgrounds – had met. Together they made soup, vegetarian curry and rice and apple crumble for nearby shelter, Ashford Place in Cricklewood.
The event aimed to meet the charity’s commitment to ‘going greener’ in 2019. This year’s event takes place on, and around, Sunday, 17 November.
Mitzvah Day’s interfaith advisor Rabbi Jeff Berger said: “It was inspiring to be part of today’s interfaith team effort to cook a delicious three-course meal for the Ashford Place homeless shelter. Our volunteers, from widely diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, had such great energy we hardly noticed the time pass.
“Our Abrahamic traditions are rooted in providing food hospitality. There’s something spiritually nourishing in group cooking, especially when the result is for someone we may never meet.”
