Hamas is behind the 34 rockets fired from Lebanon at northern Israel on Thursday, according the Israeli military.

IDF said that while Hezbollah wasn’t involved in the attack, Lebanon is responsible for any attack coming from its territory. Israel is currently checking if Iran was somehow involved, IDF added.

Dozens of villages and cities came under rocket fire in northern Israel, with one rocket causing damage to a road and a building in the village of Shlomi.

“Following the reports regarding the sirens which sounded in the western Galilee region, an initial inquiry identified 34 rockets that were fired from Lebanese territory into Israeli territory. 25 rockets were intercepted by the IDF Aerial Defense Array,” IDF said in a statement.

“Five rockets landed in Israeli territory. Regarding the four additional launches, the information about their location is under review. The statistics are not final,” the army added.

Prime Minister Netanyahu will meet with the political security cabinet tonight to assess the situation.

The White House issued a statement on Thursday, saying: “We condemn the launch of rockets from Lebanon and Gaza… and we recognise Israel’s legitimate right to defend itself against all forms of aggression.”

United Nations peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, UNIFIL called the current situation “extremely serious.”

“UNIFIL urges restraint and to avoid further escalation,” it added. The attack comes as Hamas leader Ishmael Haniyeh was visiting Beirut where he was expected to meet with Hezbollah officials.

According to Magen David Adom, a woman was mildly injured by shrapnel. MDA said it eased the alert levels and “reinforced with medics and paramedics all over the country.”
