Israel serve up vital win over Latvia
Israel’s Federation Cup women’s tennis team maintained their place in the Europe/Africa Zone Group I after beating Latvia in a winner-takes-all clash in Budapest, Hungary.
Having fallen to two 3-0 defeats against Croatia and Belgium in Pool D, the Israeli team had to beat the Latvians to avoid relegation to Group II.
Julia Glushko, ranked No. 146 in the world, beat Jelena Ostapenko (266) 7-5, 6-3, before Shahar Pe’er (113), on her return from injury, beat Diana Marcinkevica (262) 6-1, 6-1.
The win saw Israel end Pool D in third place from four teams, meaning they will play in Group I for a seventh straight year in 2016.
