‘Jew’ daubed on French MEP’s campaign poster in Paris
'Paris in 2019... This old plague will never disappear completely,' the candidate wrote on social media
A Jewish MEP candidate’s campaign poster was daubed with a hook nose and the words Achtung Juden (Attention Jew), rauss (out) and juif (Jew) in Paris.
Raphaël Glucksmann, who is standing for the centre-left party Place Publique in May’s elections, published a photo of the campaign poster on social media on Wednesday.
“Paris in 2019… This old plague will never disappear completely. And we will always have to fight it. Everywhere. Whatever the minority targeted,” he wrote.
“We will no longer concede an inch. We will not lower our heads nor our eyes. We will pursue antisemitic and racist hatred, and those who seek to exploit it.”
Hugues Renson, vice-president of France’s National Assembly, was among the country’s public figures to offer their support to Glucksmann.
“Political projects may separate us, but what is important brings us together: the republic and unity of the nation,” he wrote.
“Nauseous at the sight of such antisemitic graffiti in Paris. They have no place in our country.”
