Jewish groups around the world join 'We Remember' campaign to mark HMD

Organisations in the US and Europe have helped the World Jewish Congress promote its #WeRemember campaign to coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day this Sunday.

In New York, social media giant Twitter got involved by hosting an event and designing a unique emoji for the campaign, while in Brussels, NATO headquarters also helped share the message.

Now in its third year, the campaign encourages people to post photos of themselves holding a #WeRemember poster. This year tens of thousands of those images will be livestreamed and projected at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The notorious death camp’s liberation date – 27 January marks International Holocaust Memorial Day every year, but the World Jewish Congress and partners said new technology could help spread awareness of its lessons.

“This year we chose to partner with the WJC #WeRemember campaign as a way of using new technology and social media to reach the widest possible audience,” said Italian Ambassador to NATO Claudio Bisogniero.

WJC chief executive Robert Singer said: “Education is key to raising awareness about antisemitism, and so too are the critical international partnerships that we are building to secure commitment to this effort.

“It is all the more significant that we have brought this initiative to the headquarters of NATO, the very organization that was created to unify nations in the wake of the horrors of the Holocaust and World War II.”
