After consulting its members, the Jewish Labour Movement has confirmed it has nominated Bridget Phillipson for Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

Phillipson won 72% of the vote, while Lucy Powell received 28% of support from JLM members who made a selection.

National Chair, Ella Rose-Jacobs said: “The Jewish Labour Movement has been affiliated to the Labour Party since 1920, and takes our rights and responsibilities seriously.

“After an excellent turnout from our members we are delighted to nominate Bridget Phillipson MP to be Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

“We trust her to safeguard the hard work of Keir Starmer MP in ridding the Labour Party of antisemitism and taking us forwards as Labour continues the vital work of government.”

Many JLM members are believed to have taken a dim view of Powell’s shadow cabinet roles under Jeremy Corbyn.

Bridget Phillipson MP said: “I’m honoured to receive the support of the Jewish Labour Movement for the deputy leadership.

“Like JLM, I am determined that our party and our Labour government are focused on shaping our future not arguing about the past.

“I will be a voice for members and our affiliated societies round the Cabinet table — bringing Labour’s heart and soul into government.

“As Deputy Leader I will unite the party, tell Labour’s story, and make sure we bring the change people chose — ensuring we defeat Reform and win again”

The deputy leadership race was triggered by the resignation of former deputy prime minister and housing secretary Angela Rayner after she admitted underpaying stamp duty on a flat.

Phillipson is thought to be Downing Street’s preferred candidate for the role, as she remains a sitting Cabinet minister, but ministers have distanced themselves from the race.

Powell, was the former Commons leader, but was ousted in Keir Starmer’s latest reshuffle.
