Kerem School looks at the many faces of Israel
An innovative project teaches pupils about the many cultures that make up the Jewish community
Last year the Ivrit department at Kerem School launched a new project called The Many Faces of Israel. The idea was to expose the pupils to the melting pot of cultures and communities who live in Israel. So far the Ethiopian Jewish community, the Yemenite community and, more recently, the Persian Jewish community, have been integrated into the curriculum.
The pupils have learnt about the history, geography and culture of each community and have participated in activities such as cooking authentic dishes, recreating architecture, weaving and designing carpets and baskets, learning songs and dances, engaging in the language, to name just a few activities.
The project has been such a success that it is now integrated into the wider school community. Parents and teachers from relevant backgrounds have shared their own experiences and enlightened the children with tales of their travels out of their country and details of how they coped living in Israel (and other countries) as an immigrant.
This project has been an excellent way to teach diversification and to allow the pupils at Kerem to get a greater understanding of the people of Israel.
