Lib Dem MP apologises ‘unreservedly’ for comparing colleagues to Shoah survivors
Jamie Stone criticised for a 'thoughtless remark' about his party's politicians from the previous parliament
A Liberal Democrat MP has apologised ‘unreservedly’ after appearing to compare his colleagues from the last parliament to being like Holocaust survivors.
The head of the Holocaust Educational Trust criticised newly-elected MP Jamie Stone for a “thoughtless remark” made in the Times this week.
Speaking about the Lib Dems’ electoral improvement from eight to 12 seats in the 2017 election, Stone said: “I’m told this by staff that the parliamentary party is a lot more cheerful. They tell me the party in the previous parliament was shellshocked, it was like survivors of the holocaust. Now there’s much more team spirit.”
Karen Pollock, CEO of the Holocaust Educational Trust said it was a “thoughtless remark from someone who should know better.”
When asked if he stood by his remark, Jamie Stone MP said: “I apologise unreservedly for this insensitive comment and for any offence that was caused.”
Stone took the Scottish seat of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, in 2017 with a majority of just over 2,000 votes.
