Lord Dubs attacks Theresa May’s refugee policy
Labour peer criticises the government's failure to help child refugees, whilst campaigning in Finchley and Golders Green
Labour peer Lord Alf Dubs was in Finchley and Golders Green this week to help party candidate Jeremy Newmark unseat Tory MP Mike Freer.
Dubs, who was brought to the UK as a young child from Prague on the Kindertransport, last year shot to national prominence after pressing the Government to admit 3,000 unaccompanied child refugees, but Theresa May abandoned the scheme after admitting only 350.
Dubs said: “The Jewish community in Finchley and Golders Green has been fantastically supportive of child refugees, but the same cannot be said for their MP or the Government he supports.”
He added: “The Government reneged on its obligations to child refugees and this is a crucial issue in this election in terms of our attitude to children who are amongst the most vulnerable anywhere.”
Newmark said: “I hope voters will be asking why Mike Freer failed to support the child refugees who would have come here if the Government had kept its word on the Dubs Amendment.”
