Former UK Supreme Court president Lord Neuberger has called for the principles of fairness and respect that underpin judicial independence to be embedded in education, during a keynote address at Oasis of Peace UK’s annual Rueff Lecture in Hampstead.

Speaking to a packed audience at St Mary’s Catholic Church, the former top judge explored how an independent judiciary protects democracy, equality and public trust – drawing on examples from Israel, the UK and the United States.

“It’s fundamental to Wahat al-Salam-Neve Shalom that everyone, whatever their religion or ethnic origins, is entitled to the same rights as everyone else,” he said. “That they should live in accordance with the rule of law in peace, with respect to others and expecting respect in return.”

The event, organised by the Lawyer’s Group of Oasis of Peace UK, brought together senior legal figures, educators and supporters to explore how the rule of law and values of coexistence intersect.

Lord Neuberger’s reflections resonated with the mission of Oasis of Peace UK’s partner community, Wahat al-Salam-Neve Shalom, where Jewish and Palestinian citizens live, learn, and work together in equality. Its bilingual primary school teaches Jewish, Muslim and Christian children side by side, fostering understanding through shared language and mutual respect.

David Altaras, chair of the Lawyer’s Group, said the lecture “was a powerful reminder that justice isn’t confined to the courtroom – it’s a value that must be lived and taught every day. Lord Neuberger brought to life how the rule of law connects to the everyday practice of coexistence that Neve Shalom-Wahat-al-Salam represents so beautifully.”

Sponsored by Mishcon de Reya, with Jewish News as media partner, the evening drew praise for bridging the legal and educational worlds – highlighting how both can nurture a more just and respectful society.
