Luciana Berger is Labour MP of the year at 'People's Awards'

Jewish MP was “honoured” and “humbled” to receive the recognition from the Patchwork Foundation this week, at a ceremony at Speaker’s House on Wednesday.

Luciana Berger has picked up a ‘People’s Award’ for ‘Labour MP of the Year’ from a new organisation making politics more accessible to young people from disadvantaged and minority communities.

The Jewish Labour MP for Liverpool for Liverpool Wavertree said she was “honoured” and “humbled” to receive the recognition from the Patchwork Foundation this week, at a ceremony at Speaker’s House on Wednesday.

Berger was one of 15 MPs honoured by the organisation, with International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt picking up the ‘Overall MP of the Year’ award, in recognition of her work for women’s rights.

Others who received awards included Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott, former attorney-general Dominic Grieve and Education Secretary Damian Hinds.

Berger, whose work on mental health has drawn cross-party support, said: “I am incredibly honoured to have won the public vote for the Patchwork Labour People’s Choice MP of the Year. Patchwork undertakes remarkable work in our communities and I’m truly humbled to be recognised by the organisation.”

She added that there was “still much work to do in tackling the under-representation of deprived and minority communities in Parliament and in politics as a whole”.

Patchwork aims to engage young people from ethnic and faith communities in politics, and works with those from different socio-economic backgrounds to offer them involvement in civil society and democratic politics at various levels.
