Luciana Berger joins race to be Liverpool’s mayor
Following months of speculation, the shadow minister for mental health has confirmed she will run to be at the helm of the city where she's an MP
Luciana Berger has joined the race to be Labour’s mayoral candidate in Liverpool, becoming the second frontbencher to run to be in charge of a northern city.
The Jewish politician who is shadow minister for mental health put her name forward to be the new Liverpool Metro Mayor, making a formal announcement in her constituency on Tuesday.
She said the role the role was “a massive opportunity to unite the city region and launch it on to an international stage” according to the Guardian.
Her candidacy comes weeks after Shadow Home Secretary Andy Burnham announced his intentions to run for Mayor in Greater Manchester.
The Liverpool Wavertree MP will be up against incumbent mayor Joe Anderson and fellow Liverpudlian MP Steve Rotheram.
The Labour nomination for the Liverpool Metro Mayor is due to take place in the summer, whilst the election itself will be in May 2017.
