Major restoration project launched for Lauderdale Road Synagogue
S&P Sephardi community in Maida Vale unveils conservation plans alongside new vision for future hub and facilities
The Spanish and Portuguese Sephardi Community has launched a major conservation and restoration project to preserve and protect its historic Lauderdale Road Synagogue in west London for future generations.
S&P leaders say urgent works are now needed to address structural deterioration, water ingress (damp) and the preservation of key architectural features at the landmark synagogue, which has stood at the heart of Sephardi Jewish life in Britain for more than a century.
The project – which was shared at a shul meeting on Monday 27 April as part of a wider fundraising and engagement campaign- will also include plans for new rabbinic residences, offices and future facilities aimed at strengthening communal life and ensuring the long term sustainability of the synagogue and wider community.
Sian Levy, vice Chair of the S&P Sephardi Community, hailed the “major and necessary project” to protect the future of Lauderdale Road Synagogue, alongside developing future communal and educational spaces to “properly serve the next generation and help safeguard one of the most important centres of Sephardi Jewish life in Britain.”
Daniel Sacerdoti, Parnas Presidente of the S&P Sephardi Community, added: “Historic religious buildings across Britain are facing growing pressure from age, rising costs and the scale of conservation now required to preserve them properly, and Lauderdale Road Synagogue is no exception.
“Whilst a historic building, Lauderdale Road remains a living hub for worship, education and community life, and there is now a growing recognition of the importance of protecting our communal institutions and taking responsibility for securing their future.”
Sacerdoti described the project as being about “preserving an important part of British Jewish and Sephardi heritage” while also ensuring “the community has the facilities, infrastructure and stability it needs for generations to come.
“We hope people both within and beyond the community will recognise its significance and support it.”
