Masters football review – week 12
Raiders extended their lead at the top of Division One, while there was a 12-goal thriller played out in Division Two, writes Jeremy Silverstone
North London Raiders continued their seemingly relentless title challenge, HMH recorded a first league win of the season, while there were goals aplenty in the sole Division Two game.
DIVISION ONE:
TABLE
Pace-setters North London Raiders extended their lead at the top of the table with a 2-1 win over Scrabble thanks to goals from Wayne Davidson and Ben Simons.
Also winning by the same score – though much less predictably – were HMH, who recorded their first win of the season as they edged out Brady A, courtesy of a brace from Jon Levene. Mark Wagman replied for Brady.
Elsewhere, despite being a goal down at the break to Max Radford’s spot kick, Chigwell staged a second half fightback to beat Lions A 5-1. A hat-trick from Steve Summers and goals from Lloyd Becker and Adam Klein ensured that Chigwell took all three points, and leapfrogged Lions into second spot.
DIVISION TWO:
TABLE
The only game of the day proved to be an epic encounter between old adversaries Marshside and Glenthorne as they drew 6-6.
Glenthorne took an early three-goal advantage, but Marshside pulled one back only for Glenthorne to score a fourth. Marshside again fought back to 4-3, before conceding a fifth and then going down to ten men. Despite their numerical disadvantage, Marshside continued to battle, and were rewarded with a fourth goal, but they gave away another goal to make it 6-4. With just a minute of the game remaining, Marshside clawed it back to 6-5 and in injury time, converted a penalty to restore parity at 6-6!
Marshside’s scorers in this most dramatic of matches saw Gil Barel and Fara Moghim score two each, with Andrew Cohen and Barry Silkman – who converted the last-gasp penalty equaliser to deny Glenthorne the opportunity to take second place – also on target.
