MP Grahame Morris apologises for ‘poorly worded’ tweet
Morris refused to apologise, but a Labour Party spokesman said: “This was a poorly-worded tweet. Grahame Morris has campaigned against discrimination all his life.”
A pro-Palestinian Labour MP has accepted that a Twitter post in which he appeared to compare Israel to the Nazis was “poorly worded”.
Grahame Morris, MP for Easington and chair of Labour Friends of Palestine, posted a comment to a picture of Israeli flags, alongside the words: “Nazis in my village, do you see the flag they fly.”
Morris is well-known for his anti-Israel stance, but the latest slight could land him in hot water, because European guidelines state that “drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis” could fall under the banner of anti-Semitism.
Labour Friends of Israel declined to comment and Morris refused to apologise, but a Labour Party spokesman – speaking on his behalf – said: “This was a poorly-worded tweet. Grahame Morris has campaigned against discrimination all his life.”
