MP who fought censure over antisemitism rally to speak at JLM conference event
Rosie Duffield among a number of high-profile Labour politicians to address the Jewish Labour Movement's fringe gathering next week
A Labour MP whose local constituency party sought to censure her for speaking out against Labour anti-Semitism only two weeks ago is to appear at this year’s Jewish Labour Movement fringe event ahead of the party conference in Liverpool.
Rosie Duffield, the new MP for Canterbury who was this month challenged by local supporters for supporting a protest against anti-Semitism in the party, is to appear at the eagerly-anticipated JLM rally on Sunday afternoon.
Duffield’s appearance is a bold statement of intent so soon after she was heavily criticised for attending a London rally against Labour’s anti-Semitism in March, when the constituency party chairman granted an emergency meeting to hear members’ concerns about Duffield’s actions and their impact on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. The critics’ motion was easily defeated.
She will be joined by other big names, including Jewish Labour MPs Luciana Berger, Dame Louise Ellman, Dame Margaret Hodge, Alex Sobel and Ruth Smeeth, many of whom have spoken out about the abuse they have received in the past year.
Other speakers include Rabbi Ariel Abel, centre-left commentator Richard Angell, MPs Stella Creasy and Ian Austin, Seb Dance MEP, Cllr Keith Dibble, Senior Reform Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner and Momentum founder Jon Lansman.
John Mann, the chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Anti-Semitism, and Wes Streeting MP, who chairs the APPG on British Muslims, will also be there.
