Scottish MP sorry for calling opponent a ‘Holocaust denier’
Natalie McGarry accused her political rival of being a denier, before apologising and committing to making a donation
A Scottish MP has said sorry to a political opponent for calling him a “Holocaust denier” and agreed to make a charitable donation, after he sued.
Natalie McGarry, MP for Glasgow East, had also accused Scotland in Union director Alastair Cameron of being an “internet troll” before she was forced into the embarrassing climb-down.
“I made a serious mistake and accept there is no truth to those statements,” she said in a statement. “I apologise unreservedly to Mr Cameron for any distress caused.”
Cameron set up Scotland in Union to argue for Scotland remaining in the UK, contrary to the aims of McGarry’s Scottish National Party (SNP).
The BBC reported that McGarry is believed to be down £10,000 after paying the donations and covering Cameron’s legal expenses.
