National secretary of Jewish Labour Movement is new leader of Ealing Council
Peter Mason elected head of the local party group, pledging to run the local authority in an 'inclusive and transparent' manner
Peter Mason, the Jewish Labour Movement’s national secretary, is the new leader of Ealing Council in west London.
Mason was elected leader of the local Labour group at a meeting of councillors on Monday where he replaced previous leader Julian Bell.
The JLM official, who has served as Ealing’s Cabinet Member for Housing, Planning & Transformation, will take at the post of council leader at the annual general meeting next Tuesday.
Mason, who represents a ward in Southall Green, said:” I am determined to demonstrate to the residents of our borough that Labour is on their side.
“Under my leadership, Ealing will be an open, inclusive and transparent council that engages and involves residents in tackling the big challenges we face.”
In a statement JLM said:”A huge mazal tov to our National Secretary Peter Mason on becoming Leader of Ealing Council, kol ha’kavod.”
Mason is a trained town planner, holding an MSc in Urban Regeneration from the Bartlett School of Planning.
He has been backed by the majority Labour Group to improve performance for the party who saw their lead falling by 4 percentage points in the recent Greater London Assembly election as the Conservatives, the Lib Dems and the Greens all made ground.
