Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described Hamas as the “new Nazis” at a press conference staged in Tel Aviv after his meeting with Rishi Sunak.

Israel’s PM observed that Britain had “fought the Nazis resolutely 80 years ago” and also how US President Joe Biden had labelled Hamas “worse than Isis.”

Netanyahu continued:”He’s right, Hamas are the new Nazis, the new ISIS, and we have to fight them together just as the civilised world united to fight the Nazis.”

The Israeli PM said an “axis of evil” which included Iran, wanted to drag the Middle East back to the barbarism of the Middle Ages.

He claimed Hamas had acted now because Israel was on the brink of further peace deals with “modern” Arab states.

Netanyahu said Israel and the world was now facing its “darkest hour” and he valued the support from countries such as the UK.

He praised Sunak for arriving in Israel to show his support, and also claimed that the population in of the Jewish state had never been more united over responding to Hamas.

Downing Street has confirmed Sunak had expressed “the deep condolences of the British people for the terrible loss of life that has occurred in Israel” as he met Netanyahu.

“He underscored the UK’s firm belief in Israel’s right to self-defence in accordance with international humanitarian law, as they work to end the threat of Hamas and secure the freedom of hundreds of Israeli hostages,” they added.

The Prime Minister also thanked Netanyahu “for his support for the British nationals who have been taken by Hamas and both leaders agreed to work closely together to secure their freedom”.
