New season at JW3 features contemporary ballet

Triple bill showcases storytelling and performance art

A contemporary ballet triple bill at JW3 next month explores questions of identity and inheritance through Jewish stories, reimagined for the present day.

It includes Lot’s Wife, Marika Brussel’s feminist reworking of a biblical figure, receiving its first live performance; Mr. Greentree, a multimedia solo inspired by Austrian-Jewish cabaret artist and anti-fascist Fritz Grünbaum; and Slant of the Earth, a UK premiere revisiting the story of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar.

American contemporary ballet choreographer and teacher Marika Brussel is known for creating narrative-driven, socially conscious ballets that blend classical technique with contemporary storytelling. She creates ballets that often explore myths, personal stories, and social issues.

Fritz Grünbaum, one of the most famous cabaret performers in Vienna in the early 20th century, was also a passionate art collector, especially of Egon Schiele, as well as works by Klimt, Kokoschka, and other modernists. He died at Dachau in 1941 ad his   collection became one of the most significant and contested cases of Nazi-looted art.

This celebration of movement, history and storytelling captures the spirit of JW3’s  uniquely Jewish cultural programme.

From Ash to Promise is at JW3 on 8 February at 7:30pm. jw3.org.uk
