Six new short plays debuted at Upstairs At The Gatehouse theatre last month as part of the Summertime Show hosted by the Jewish Dramatic Association of London (JDAL). They were all written by Jewish playwrights and performed and directed by Jewish creatives.

They featured a diverse range of performances. Recollection of the Old City, directed by Conrad Cohen and written by Deborah Cleland-Harris, was about two inseparable sisters who keep each other company in the bathroom and an unimaginable world opens up. Haunting, written and directed by Jon Godsi, was about Danny who wants to move forward but the past is never letting go. A Route Home, written by Lucy Singer and directed by Tomer Aldubi, is about Andie who is taking the bus home and realises the bus driver may not be such a stranger after all.

Stage Directions, written by Jonathan Ellman and directed by Sarah Giulianti, is an absurdist-influenced meditation on creativity and the human desire for meaning and how individuals both shape, and are shaped, by those around them. Haman Comes Fourth, written by Andrew Hough and directed by Jon Godsi, is a Purim-themed work and Don’t Be Rude To Uncle Brian, written and directed by Natan Paul-Collis, who is the founder of JDAL, and is set in a time of financial struggle amidst a global crisis and the steps a family must take to survive.

JDAL founder Natan Paul-Collis said: “JDAL 3 was an absolute triumph!
It was truly wonderful to welcome a packed, sold-out audience for the third consecutive time. The evening showcased an exceptional lineup of all-Jewish actors, directors, and writers — each bringing powerful, original stories to life on stage. The Jewish spirit continues to burn brightly, and it will never be extinguished!”
