Non-Jewish schools produce newspaper commemorating the Holocaust

The 32-page publication coincides with the 73rd anniversary of the UN Genocide Convention, and includes articles on survivors as well as genocides since the Holocaust.

Non-Jewish schools across Britain have joined forces to create a newspaper commemorating the Holocaust, to mark the 73rd anniversary of the UN’s genocide convention.

The 32-page ‘Genocide Know More’ features articles about students’ family history in the Shoah, the Kindertransport, and genocides since the Holocaust.

More than 70 students were involved in the project across nine different schools, including Hampton School, Bedminster Down, Belle Vue Girls’ Academy, Claverham Community College, Enfield County School for Girls, Royal Liberty School, Scarsdale High School (US), St Edward’s School and Turing House School.

Hampton School reached out to Jewish News about the project for genocide prevention week (2-9 December), which was overseen by History teacher Andy Lawrence, who said his students have “worked for months to research, do interviews and write their stories”.

The independent boys’ school has a 20-strong student campaign team called Genocide80Twenty, which was set up 14 years ago to educate about the Shoah; and which linked up with other participating schools, including in the US, to publish the newspaper.

Karen Pollock, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, praised their work, saying: “What these students have done is nothing short of remarkable. With the support of their inspirational teacher Mr Lawrence, this talented and dedicated cohort are independently raising awareness amongst their peers, their families and their communities.
