ON THIS DAY: Arab armies invade Israel as War of Independence begins
On this day (15/05/1948), the War of Independence began.
After the establishment of Israel on May 14, surrounding Arab armies invaded the new state.
The Kingdom of Egypt, Transjordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia all committed military force to the invasion, starting the 1948 Arab–Israeli War.
