Priti Patel urges all MPs to back Hamas proscribing after Jerusalem terror attack
Home secretary makes renewed call following the murder of Eliyahu Kay in Jerusalem, saying 'inciting and supporting terrorist activity is clearly wrong'
Home Secretary Priti Patel has called for “all members of this House” to support moves to proscribe the Hamas organisation in full following the murder of 26 year-old Eliyahu Kay in Jerusalem on Sunday by a member of the terror group.
Speaking in the Commons on Monday Patel responded to a Topical Question put to her by the Tory MP Christian Wakeford.
The Bury South MP had said he “strongly welcomed” the decision to ban the political wing of Hamas adding the “horrific murder of Eli yesterday in the Old City reiterates this decision.”
Wakeford then asked whether “anyone spreading” the ideology of the Islamic group in the UK, including waving flags, would “feel the full force of the law?”
The Home Secretary confirmed proscribing the organisation would come forward this week for debate in the Commons before adding that her Tory colleague “clearly understands the importance and significance of proscribing Hamas in all its forms.”
Patel added: “When this comes to the House this week for the debate I hope that all members will support this. Clearly inciting and supporting terrorist activity is clearly wrong.”
Eliyahu Kay, 26, had sustained a head injury and later died in hospital after a member of Hamas opened fire on civilians near the Western Wall.
Kay was the grandson of South Hampstead synagogue’s senior rabbi Shlomo Levin, and nephew of Brondesbury Park rabbi Baruch Levin.
The attack was carried out by 42-year-old Fadi Abu Shkhaidem, a member of Hamas political wing, from East Jerusalem, who was shot dead by security forces at the scene.
The Home Secretary had announced the banning of the political wing of Hamas last Friday on a visit to Washington, America.
