Rare barmitzvah gift Superman comic goes to auction
A rare Superman comic specially commissioned by a British property tycoon to mark his son’s 13th birthday is to be auctioned.
Godfrey Bradman paid £10,000 in 1988 to get the DC Comics team to make a special edition featuring his son Daniel, some friends and family.
Around 200 copies of the comic – said to be the most specialised custom-created comic made by the team – were printed and given to friends and family.
One of them is now expected to fetch up to £2,000 when it goes under the hammer at Catherine Southon Auctioneers and Valuers Ltd in Surrey on November 20.
The comic is being sold by an anonymous former worker for the Bradman family who forgot all about it after being given it as a gift.
The worker said: “I worked for the Bradman family 25 years ago and, because I had young children at the time, they very kindly gave me a copy of Daniel’s special Superman comic.
“I completely forgot about it though.
“It was only when one of my friends mentioned that she had seen something similar online and had remembered that I had talked about the comic at the time that I went through my stored-away boxes and found it again.”
The comic, entitled This Island Bradman, was written by David Levin, drawn by Curt Swan and the inking was by Angelo Torres.
Ms Southon said: “It is always particularly exciting if you see something at a valuation day and you immediately realise how special it was when it was created and how valuable it is now.”
