Red Army veterans recall VE Day
Around 3,000 former Russian-speaking fighters who fought for the Red Army live in Israel today and soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces and youth groups joined in recognition.
Jewish veterans of the Red Army commemorated Victory in Europe (VE) Day across the world last week, just before fighting in
Gaza made headlines.
Around 3,000 former Russian-speaking fighters who fought for the Red Army live in Israel today and soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces and youth groups joined in recognition.
Defence Minister Benny Gantz, Aliyah and Integration Minister Pnina Tamano-Shata, and Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion all honoured the former fighters.
The US, Britain and Western allies declared Victory in Europe on 8 May 1945, but countries from the former Soviet Union mark the event
a day later because hostilities ceased at 11pm Central European Time.
