Rocket from Gaza hits Israeli south as IDF strikes terror targets in response
No injuries reported in southern Israel after projectile fired from the Hamas-controlled Palestinian territory
Alert sirens sounded in southern Israel on Wednesday evening after a rocket fired from the Hamas-controlled Gaza strip landed in the south of the country.
Israel struck a Hamas military post in retaliation to the rocket attack, in which no Israelis were injured, according to a statement by the IDF.
The incident was the latest flare up along the border in Gaza, where Palestinians have been protesting for months.
Board of deputies president Marie van der Zyl said: “I am deeply worried about the rockets fired at Israeli territory last night. Fortunately, there haven’t been any casualties so far.
“The terrorist organisation Hamas, which is committed to Israel’s destruction, needs to be held accountable for these acts of terrorism.
“The State of Israel has every right to defend her borders and civilians.”
On Wednesday ex-military chief Benny Gantz, the leading challenger to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said Israel should “find a way in which we’re not controlling other people” in comments that were welcomed by Palestinians
