Sadiq Khan said remembering Holocaust victims on Yom HaShoah is ‘more important than ever’.
The London Mayor’s message comes as the annual commemoration ceremony was forced online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Khan, who chose a Yom HaShoah event as his first event upon being elected in 2016, said attending each year is “something I’m proud to do.. and it is with great regret that we can’t all come together in person today.”
But even though we are physically separated, we can still take this moment to remember together the six million”.
He reflected on his visit to Auschwitz earlier this year to mark the 75th anniversary of its liberation as he warned again allowing hatred to go unchecked, which “feels more important than ever before, as we confront the depressing reality that hatred, antisemitism.. is on the rise”.
Whereas Holocaust Memorial Day is a national day of remembrance, Yom HaShoah is the community’s day for reflection.
