Sadiq Khan to be guest of honour at Board of Deputies’ annual dinner
London mayor thanked for being 'very supportive of our community' as he is invited to attend the representative body's 2018 gathering
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan will be the guest of honour at the Board of Deputies’ annual dinner.
The head of the community’s representative body thanked him for being “very supportive of our community” as they made the announcement on Tuesday.
After becoming mayor, he chose the 2016 Yom Hashoah remembrance ceremony as his first official engagement. In the past two years, he has spoken out against anti-Semitism, including in the Labour Party, while writing to three Home Secretaries urging the banning of the annual Al Quds Day march. He has also attended numerous interfaith meetings with the Chief Rabbi, including Chanukah in the Square, and Holocaust memorial events.
Welcoming the news of his attendance at the annual dinner, Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl said: We are delighted that Sadiq Khan has accepted our invitation to be the guest of honour at our annual President’s Dinner. Sadiq has been very supportive of our community, speaking out on Labour’s antisemitism crisis and calling for the proscription of Hezbollah. Nobody will forget that Sadiq’s very first engagement as Mayor was to attend the community’s Yom Hashoah commemoration. At this challenging time for our community we can think of no one better to address the community’s hopes and concerns.”
