Shapps handed business role by Sunak
Having served as home secretary for less than one week under former PM Liz Truss, Jewish MP Grant Shapps is made business secretary under Rishi Sunak
Grant Shapps has been appointed new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s business secretary as part of his cabinet reshuffle.
The former BBYO president was moved from the home secretary role, less than one week after he had stepped into the role under former PM Liz Truss.
Shapps is replaced in the home secretary’s role by Suella Braverman, whose resignation from the post, had allowed the Jewish MP to take up the position.
Despite being on the right of the Tory Party, Braverman had significantly offered her support to Sunak’s leadership campaign last weekend.
But her re-appointment is likely be seized upon by the other parties, with Braverman resigning after admittingsending an official document from her personal email – a breach of security.
Shapps, who has previously served in housing, international development and party chair roles, and takes over from departing Jacob Rees-Mogg in his new post.
Other appointments in Sunak’s reshuffle included Nadhim Zahawi as party chair, Oliver Dowden as cabinet office minister, with James Cleverly remaining as foreign secretary.
Jeremy Hunt remains in the vital chancellor role, ahead of the expected fiscal statement.
Penny Mordaunt remains leader of the house.
