Shoah educator condemns ‘Nazi salutes’ from Lazio fans in Glasgow
Holocaust Educational Trust say the footage which emerged on Friday was 'shocking and offensive' and urge action to be taken
A Holocaust educator has condemned footage which shows Italian football fans reportedly performing Nazi salutes in Glasgow.
A clip emerged on Twitter this Friday showing a group of men dressed in black performing the gesture, ahead of the Lazio’s clash with Celtic on Thursday evening.
The fans were said to have chanted far-right slogans as they marched down Buchanan Street, as onlookers were left shocked.
Reacting to the footage, Holocaust Educational Trust Chief Executive, Karen Pollock, commented: “This is shocking and offensive footage that we don’t expect to see on our streets. I hope that strong action is taken, sending a clear message that racist and hateful behaviour is not acceptable.
“This follows other recent incidents of deeply disturbing antisemitic and racist behaviour by football fans and more needs to be done to tackle this.”
Before the game, Lazio had urged its fans not to make Nazi salutes or racist gestures.According to the Times, the club’s security manager, Nicolo D’Angelo, said: “Unfortunately we still have a minority of fans who believe it’s acceptable to give the Roman salute and to make racist comments. This is unacceptable and no longer tolerable.
“The image of Lazio abroad is very important to us. Our credibility is on the line.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Enquiries are ongoing.”
