Shomrim volunteers in Barnet have been formally commended by senior Metropolitan Police officers for what commanders described as exceptional bravery during an incident involving an armed suspect outside a kosher supermarket.

At the North West BCU Commander’s Commendation Ceremony, Det Ch Supt Luke Williams issued a citation recognising the group’s “tenacity, teamwork, and bravery” after volunteers pursued a man reported to be carrying a weapon. The case had sparked significant fear locally, particularly given the location at a Jewish food store.

The commendation was presented in front of community representatives and the Mayor of Barnet, with Superintendent Lorraine Busby-McVey reading the citation on stage.

A Shomrim spokesperson said: “We are truly honoured that the Metropolitan Police have recognised our volunteers. This commendation is a testament to the courage and dedication our members show when serving the community, often placing themselves in harm’s way to protect others. Their willingness to run towards danger reflects the values at the heart of Shomrim. Although we operate independently, we work closely alongside the police, and we are grateful for the strong and constructive partnership that helps keep our community safe.”

Shomrim North West London, which is made up entirely of volunteers, has seen a significant rise in call-outs since 7 October amid heightened concerns about antisemitic incidents and communal security.

Community leaders praised today’s recognition as an important signal of support for Jewish residents, many of whom rely on Shomrim as a first responder network trusted within the community.
