Jack Shulman brought the ball down, went past a player before laying it off to Cohen 30 yards out, who hits a first time effort into the top corner – the the ball started a good two yards outside the post and couldn’t have finished any more in the top corner! Jordan Henderson vs Chelsea esque!

A brilliant crossfield ball from Dan Green found Bharier, who controlled the ball on his chest and having noticed the Oakwood goalkeeper slightly off his line, launched a blistering curling shot into the roof of the net from 45 yards out

Leor Harel played a great ball out wide to Markiewicz, who turned inside and managed to curl the ball over the goalkeeper from 20 yards out and into the far right corner

Not the greatest shock, despite the two-Division gap as the Division Two high-fliers won at the struggling top-flight side.

Player-manager Avi Markiewicz led by example, scoring twice for the victors, with Gideon Caller also on target.

Markiewicz told jewishnews.co.uk: “Another Premier Division team, another convincing win. How the hell do we struggle against any teams in our division!?

“Mazeltov to Eli Shebson, who is getting married but it did almost cause us to call the game off after being unable to raise enough players. That would have been such a waste after the win against Oakwood and so some of the players who originally pulled out made the extra effort to get down for the game.

“We believed from the first minute that we could win it and we used that belief to fuel us on to victory. We set up in a 4-4-1 formation with Josh Shaffer man marking Rob Hershkorn and that’s what he did to perfection. We knew that if we eliminated that threat then it would stifle Camden heavily.

“Unlike against Oakwood we didn’t sit back as much, but played our own football and more than deservedly took the lead at about the 15th minute. Camden posed little threat but after 35 minutes on the clock an error from our goalkeeper hitting the ball against our own player left Camden with an open goal from two yards out that my pet blind goldfish couldn’t miss.

“Camden then went close again just before half-time, but that was the beginning and the end of the Camden chances.

“The second half again was a close affair but on the 60 minute mark Dudi Edryei received the ball wide right, a couple of step-overs later left his man for dead, hit the by line in the box then pulled it back to Gideon Caller who tucked home from close-range. We were then always dangerous on the break and squandered a couple of great chances before wrapping it up with the third to set up wild celebrations which ignited further as the full-time whistle was blown.

“Although it may be the goalscorers who are mentioned, it was the defensive players who really won that game for us. The shape and discipline was first class the entire game. Not a mistake all match, soaked up the pressure and used the ball smartly when on it. Thank God I didn’t promise first round on me again if we win like I did last time, cost me an absolute fortune. The Roses go marching on.”

MANCHESTER MACCABI 0 NORTH LONDON RAIDERS A (Prem) 1
The trip up north proved to be a worthy one for Daniel Shafron’s side as they booked their place in the quarter-finals.

Adam Joselyn netted the all-important goal, with manager Daniel Shafron telling jewishnews.co.uk: “This was a fantastic performance, in my opinion our best of the season. Manchester started the game well, but we set up compact and knew that on a difficult pitch, it was a case of getting the ball in behind them and keeping it in their half of the pitch. When we adapted, we settled in to the game and dominated possession.

“We created a few good chances in the first half but couldn’t put the ball in the net. Our goal from Jos came five minutes in to the second half and we went on to see the game out. Manchester had a couple of good chances to get back in to the game most notably an effort that Doffman kept out incredibly however all in all, we put in a super display and deserved the win.

“As far as I am concerned, we have set the bar for the level that we can clearly play to and the boys should use this performance as a platform for the remainder of our season.

“Lastly we would like to thank Manchester Maccabi, their management and players for their hospitality and wish them all the best for the rest of the season.”

Manchester joint-manager Jonathan Rose told jewishnews.co.uk: “We so nearly took the game to extra time when Harry Myers hit the crossbar with the last kick of the game!

“For this competition we went with an U23 squad rather than our regular 1st team, with the idea to bring some of our younger players through. We had three players starting who represented Maccabi GB U16 squad in Berlin two years ago; that gives you an idea of the age of the team!

“The boys gave everything and as a club we are very proud of their performance and excited about the depth and quality that we have at the club. Losing to Raiders A was no disgrace and there were far more positives than negatives to take away from this performance.

“Maccabi finished the stronger and had Myers effort gone in at the death we felt that extra-time was ours as Raiders were looking very tired at this point.”

FC TEAM A (Prem) 2 MACCABI LONDON LIONS A (Prem) 3
Lions won a five-goal thriller to edge this all-Premier Division clash.

Nick Smith, James Gold and Bradley Sharp scored for the victors.

Adam Rones and Richard Salmon scored for Team, for whom player-manager Mitch Young told jewishnews.co.uk: “I thought we were brilliant today. For 70 minutes our game plan was working perfectly and when we went 0-1 up, it was looking like Lions were not going to score.

“However, we let ourselves down in defending, a set-piece to put Lions 2-1 up which was a shame. However, we continued to defend well and hit lions on the counter.

“In truth the game should have been a draw and gone into extra-time, but  they scored their winning goal from what looked to be offside.Anyway my boys stuck to the game plan brilliantly, Lions played nice football but failed to really threaten, and we wish them the best of luck in the competition.”

REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE A 3 SOUTH MANCHESTER SPORTS CLUB 3 (South Manchester won 5-3 on penalties)
There was penalty heartache for Jon Jacobs’ side as they were knocked out in the lottery of the shoot-out following a six-goal thriller.

It was very much a case of third time lucky for South as they travelled down the M1 for the third successive year in the Peter Morrison Trophy on the back of two defeats.

Redbridge spurned the lead on three separate occasions, with two Saul Shapiro strikes and Mark Stewart’s opener forcing the shoot-out.

Adam Lavin, Toby Levy and Shapiro all converted from the spot for the Mancs, Michael Stratton and Jack Lee sent their efforts high over the bar, while goalkeeper Alex Davies also saved Redbridge’s second effort.

Manager Neil Collins told jewishnews.co.uk: “I’m so proud of the lads – it isn’t easy to get off a bus after five hours and play 120 minutes of football.

“Credit to Redbridge who were brilliant and on another day, it could have been different, but our lads worked hard an kept on coming back.

“There were some excellent individual performances, but everyone played their part, even those on the side-lines – a great win for the club and the North!”

Oakwood increased their lead at the top of the table to four points as they won this clash of the top-two.

Brad Wine, Alex Lee and Kyle Bentwood were all on target for the visitors.

O’s joint-manager Daniel Kristall told jewishnews.co.uk: “The game was tough but we managed to win it in a 10-minute spell where we shocked Hendon. We scored three brilliant goals and Kyle’s should be winning goal of the week award this week. I felt that in the first half, we were the much better side and other than the odd scare from the pace of the Hendon counter attack, I felt we had control of the game and most of the possession.

“The second half was a different game where we defended very well and soaked up the pressure that Hendon applied on us. Hendon showed us what a good team they are in the second half and that they were not unbeaten in the league for no reason, but we stood firm and asked them to break us down and it was not until the 98^th minute that they found a way through with a brilliant strike. With very few injuries and only three-four subs in the game, both Ric and I were slightly bemused at where the extra-time was coming from but we respect the referees call.

“I thought our back four plus our goalkeeper were superb, Dean was outstanding in goal. By far his best display in an Oaks shirt.

“We still have lots to improve on and yesterday was a welcome 90 minutes for players like Harv and Kyle. It’s never been so competitive for places than it is right now. We will have some difficult decisions to make this Sunday with absent players returning but that is a healthy position to be in.

“We are certainly not getting carried away as our final few games are extremely testing but if we keep the balance between goal scoring and the defensive side of our game as we are at the moment, we will give ourselves a great chance.

“We know that David will rally his troops this week and we expect a big response from them. We look forward to round two this Sunday.”

Rocky Spitzer scored for Hendon, for whom manager David Garbacz told jewishnews.co.uk: “For the second game running we had a mad 15-minute spell in a match, and during that time towards the end of the first half, we conceded three sloppy goals. Whilst they were all excellent finishes from Oakwood’s point of view they were all avoidable from ours. The first one we allowed a cross to come in from the right which should have been closed down, the second was an uncharacteristic defensive error from the otherwise excellent Yehuda Korman and the third was a speculative 40-yard free-kick which I think our goakeeper should have saved.

“Apart from that period I thought we were the superior team – in the second half especially we battered them for 45 minutes and were very unlucky to see two incredible goal line headed clearances, two chances hit the woodwork and numerous excellent saves from their goalkeeper.

“On another day we would have recovered from the half-time deficit, but it just wasn’t to be our day and they defended exceptionally well to keep us out, as we were rampant for that period. We probably gave them a bit too much respect early on and sat back too deep, but once we realised we were the better footballing team we took the game to them but the comeback was not to be.

“On the plus side I think we go into next week’s return match with all the momentum – we will have some important players back who were missing today – we were only able to name 11 men today with two more late pull-outs – and there is no doubt that next week’s match now represents a virtual cup final for both teams.

“We always said if we can get out of these two Oakwood games with three out of six points it would keep us in pole position, but there is no doubt that we cannot afford to switch off like we did today for any period in the match as a team with their quality will punish you. The boys are not too down-hearted though, we are extremely confident that we will redress the balance next time round. The league title this year promises to go right down to the wire with Redbridge still in the mix as well, and we are not going away I assure you, despite today’s result.”

Dean Rosenthal scored twice, with Nick Landesberg, Zachary Rose and Ben Weinberger also all on target.

NORTH LONDON RAIDERS B 4 LOS BLANCOS 2
Raiders are up into fourth following this hard-fought win.

Jacob Gold, with his first touch of the game and the season(!) – levelled the game, before Will Ufland’s beauty from outside the box made it 2-1 just before half-time.

Anthony Goodmaker tuned home a loose ball after an Alex Goodman header was cleared off the line to make it 3-1, and while Blancos scored a second on on the break from a Raiders corner, Alex Goodman hit a low 20-yard drive into the bottom corner just before the end to seal the three points.

Raiders manager Jonathan Adelman told jewishnews.co.uk: “Blancos only had 10 men but gave a great account of themselves.”

Joel Kutner and Luke Strauss scored for Blancos, for whom player-manager Nick Grosse told jewishnews.co.uk: “We had a heavily depleted squad going into the game with only 11 available. A further match day absence meant that we had to play with 10 men. Many of the players hadn’t played a full 90 minutes all season and, despite the score, the display was admirable, possibly our best of the season when it comes to passion, commitment, teamwork, willing and determination. I don’t have a single bad word to say about the performance, every player worked their socks off, and an injury meant we played the final ten minutes with nine men.

“The game plan was to allow the opponents room in their own half and squeeze the game when we were not in possession. Raiders had by far the most chances, but only a minority were clear-cut.

“The whole team was excellent. It was my proudest moment as Blancos manager to date. I hope those returning next week can maintain the high standards.”

OAKWOOD B 1 SCRABBLE 2
Scrabble moved up into third spot as they claimed the win, despite playing for 50 minutes with ten men after Zak McLeod was sent-off foul dissent.

A stunning Josh Bharier effort, coupled with a tap-in from Danny Sherman seeing them to the points.

Manager Ray Abrahams told jewishnews.co.uk: “What a game and what an advert for the league!

“If I was in a battle of any sort I would want these lads with me.The 10 heroes we had at any one time out there today were magnificent for the best part of an hour and the camaraderie and determination to take the three points drove us on.They did credit to this fantastic club and themselves for the way they fought today and it was one of our best performances of the season.

“With Redbridge dropping points we are closing in now on that promotion place that we want and things are back in our hands.

“It’s always a problem when you go down to 10 men and we were forced to defend deeper and deeper but we kept our shape and our nerve and defended superbly as we looked to hit them on the break.

“Oakwood are a decent side and a strong powerful team who get at you quickly and it was a terrific game.

“It’s always a pleasure to play against Oakwood as they are a top set of guys led by a top manager and who are also a club that play the game in the right spirit and the right way.”

REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE B 4 FAITHFOLD A 4
Redbridge dropped their first points of the season as they were held to a point in this eight-goal thriller.

Dan Andrews, Scott Mckenize, David Fialka and an own goal earned a point for the home side, with player-manager Sam Rank telling jewishnews.co.uk: “We didn’t turn up to the races today, and this will be a hard lesson to take. But most importantly the wake-up call the boys needed if we’re going to win the league.

“Fair play to Faithfold today, who worked hard for each other, and definitely deserved a point today. The RJC B boys will be working very hard on the training field to move to levels I know they can do. We’re now looking forward to next week’s game against Bilbuam.”

Marc Charles scored twice for the Greens, with Mike Field and Craig Cole also finding the back of the net.

The Dons moved up a couple of places in the table thanks to winning this ten-goal thriller.

Zach Cohen scored four times for the victors, with Adam Isaacs claiming the other two.

Manager Brandon Hamme told jewishnews.co.uk: “What a game and what a performance. I couldn’t be more happy with how the boys played today, last time we played Catford we lost 6-0, this time we have come away with all three points, this truly showcases how much we have improved as the season has gone on.

“In the two previous games, we have lacked that clinical edge, but today were absolutely superb and finished our chances. We got complacent at 5-1 up and conceded three goals in quick succession in the second half, but we steadied the ship after that and looked comfortable again. I’m hoping that today is a sign that we have permanently recaptured our form from the end of last year. Very positive for the rest of the season.”

Fortune kept their promotion push firmly on track as they came away with the points.

L’Equipe increased their lead at the top of the table with this emphatic win.

Andy Smith scored half their goals, with Max Martin, James Bell, Rob Simons and Nick Stern also finding the back of the net.

Sam Simon scored the visitor’s consolation goal, for whom assistant manager Anton Nyman told jewishnews.co.uk: “After the hype of back to back wins, Boca were brought back to earth by a strong, organised L’Equipe side. The scoreline doesn’t really do any justice to the first half especially. Having gone down 1-0 early on to a long throw routine, we battled back well to 1-1 through the impressive Sam Simon who rounded the keeper and defender to bury it rather like last week.

“Looking content with taking the draw into half time, we foolishly gave them another long throw routine to give them an undeserving 2-1 half time lead. The second half was all one-way traffic from the first kick and I won’t say any more than that about it!

NORTH LONDON RAIDERS C 4 HERTSWOOD VALE 2
Raiders maintained their promotion push following this win over the bottom side.

Alex Elf, Liam Stein, Andy Cohen and Rob Samuelson were all on target, with manager Sam Rose telling jewishnews.co.uk: “It was an exceedingly tough game today.

“We knew Hertsford would give us a game and our frustration threatened to boil over when they went 1-0 up. But our determination, willingness and tenacity to get the result never wavered and getting the equaliser before half-time really helped us. From there we re-grouped and went about our game plan again, with more purpose and drive in the midfield.

“These are the games and type of results that will continue to bind this group together. It was tough out there, but I’m proud of the boys and what they are achieving. That’s three on the bounce now and we’ll be pushing for four next week.”

“We put in an excellent performance, showed real focus, vision and energy, however the legs took their toll towards the end with Raiders scoring a couple of late goals. Positive signs as we look for our first win of the season.”
