Sunday Masters review – week 24
In this week’s MMFL Division 2 matches, the top three all recorded resounding victories, and the title race looks like going to the wire, with Lions and Glenthorne A battling all the way, writes Jeremy Silverstone.

Still leading the pack are London Maccabi Lions, who saw off the challenge from Brady B as goals from Michael Abraham, David Pollock, Stuart Coutts and Marc Morris earnt them the points and a 4-0 win.
Glenthorne A remain favourites, however, and following their 5-0 victory over stablemates Glenthorne B, they are seven points behind with five games in hand. The match signalled the end of Trevor Granger’s glittering managerial career, having guided Glenthorne B to within spitting distance of mid-table mediocrity, following years of bottom-of-the-table mediocrity. Only time will tell how much Glenthorne B will miss Trev’s tactical expertise, but the loss of his enthusiasm will undoubtedly leave a huge void.
Despite going two down to goals from Hendon’s Yossi Arvatz and John Nesbitt, EDRS stormed back with two goals from Mark Kingston, along with strikes from Steve Krieger, Ian Leader, James Bloom and a penalty apiece from Tony Platman and Russell Rich, to win 7-2 to finish off their league campaign in style, and guarantee a top-three place.
Meanwhile, St John’s Wood Tigers and Temple Fortune played out a 1-1 draw, with Ashley Davidson netting for Tigers and Graham Meyer scoring a brilliant individual effort for Fortune.

Elsewhere, despite being over 33-years-old and possibly past their prime, the Masters Rep team against all the odds put on a magical display to beat the run-away mix of Premier and Second division MSFL leaders Norstar London Raiders 5-2 in a end-of-season friendly.
Given Norstar London Raiders recent success, the Rep team skippered and marshalled by Braham Hockenberg at the back and experienced Gavin Hodes in central midfield controlled the game from start to finish, running out deserved winners.
The Masters team with past Maccabiah and Premier league winners rose to the occasion, playing an intricate passing game, which led to fantastic finishing from Tony Plascow and two apiece from Mark Wagman and Andy Binstock.
Referee Mike Cowen was quoted as saying: “In all my years of refereeing I’ve never seen a better Masters Rep team display”. Overjoyed Rep Team Manager Elan Ovits said: “It was an honour to manage the rep team today and a great advert for Maccabi Masters football. You can see that all our boys have played at a high standard and were physically and mentally up for the challenge, showing their true class against a formidable Nortstar team.”
