Table tennis side retain Wembley & Harrow League title
Maccabi GB’s table tennis team continued their recent success by winning the Elvin Cup and, in doing so, becoming the Wembley & Harrow League Champions for the second consecutive year.
The 1st Team, comprising Rafi Marom, Dov Katz and Jeremy Banks, beat London Academy 1st Team five matches to one on Monday night at Eastcote Table Tennis Club to clinch the coveted title. Having had to wait four years in between their last championship successes, this year’s victory came a lot quicker for the side and meant they have won their league three times in their entire history.
Team captain and chairman of MGB Table Tennis, Jeremy Banks, said: “Our team spirit and unity is unparalleled. Representing and winning for Maccabi GB, in a league which is arguably the strongest in England, is a superb achievement, and provides further incentive for our aspiring junior players to excel in the sport.”
Katz said: “It was a resounding victory in the end against a team whose players are indeed a lot younger, who train several hours each day and play all over the country for tournaments.”
The Elvin Cup, first awarded in 1932 is competed for by teams in the top two Divisions of the Wembley and Harrow League. It is named after Sir Arthur Elvin MBE who was President of the Wembley & Harrow League for 19 years.
