The Jewish Brand and Yad Vashem are behind special concert this weekend
Music by Jewish composers whose work was suppressed by Nazis can be heard in London on Sunday
Name The Jewish Brand and you would say Rakusen’s or M&S – but it’s not.
It’s the creative hub founded during Covid lockdown 2021 by Mark Forstater, a producer of Monty Python and the Holy Grail and film-maker Nathan Neuman, both of whom noticed rising antisemitism and a growing disconnect alongside diminishing space for Jewish stories in mainstream media.
Inspired by the late Jonathan Sacks and his belief in the power of cultural expression, they felt the answer was to bring writers, film-makers and artists together to produce work rooted in Jewish identity on their own terms without external approval.
October 7 brought urgency and they published The Jewish Revolt by Rachel Auerbach and A Book of Jewish Thoughts edited by Joseph Hertz. Next
up is A Book of Contemporary Jewish Thoughts but, beyond books, there is performance. The first, in partnership with Yad Vashem UK Foundation, is Forbidden Voices of WW2, a concert of music by Jewish composers whose work was suppressed under Nazi rule. Composer John Altman will introduce the music.
