Tracy-Ann takes Coward on tour
The actress heads out with a witty, gender-flipped take on Noël Coward's classic comedy
Fresh from starring in The Holy Rosenbergs, Tracy-Ann Oberman is preparing to take her own production of Noël Coward’s Present Laughter on a major UK tour. Opening at Theatre Royal Bath, the production will then visit theatres including York’s Grand Opera House, Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre and Liverpool Playhouse, among many others.
Oberman stars as Geri Essendine, a female reimagining of Coward’s famously charismatic but deeply flawed leading character, in a fresh new production directed by Lindsay Posner.
“Present Laughter is one of my favourite plays,” says Oberman. “After the success of The Merchant of Venice 1936, I wanted to see what would happen if I applied a similar idea by flipping the gender and changing the setting, while enhancing the play itself.”
“These are dark times, and this play is so funny, witty and glamorous, but with a real human truth underneath. Let’s see if audiences can love Geri Essendine, with all her fabulous flaws, as much as they have loved Gary Essendine.”
She is equally enthusiastic about the team behind the production. “I’m thrilled to have such a top-notch cast, with Peter McIntosh designing and Adam Cork providing the music. They’re both brilliant Olivier Award winners. It’s a very exciting team brought together by Lindsay Posner.”
